Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why do you use biltong cabinets instead of standard dehydrators?

Most commercial dehydrators use high heat (60 degrees Celsius and higher) which “cooks” the treat and destroys delicate enzymes. We use custom-built biltong cabinets, this drying process preserves the “raw-equivalent” nutritional integrity and creates a superior, chewy texture that dogs instinctively crave.

2. Why do you soak the meat in a vinegar solution?

We use a distilled white vinegar wash as a natural, non-toxic antimicrobial. It lowers the surface pH of the meat to inhibit spoilage and mold during the slow-drying process. Because vinegar is highly volatile, it evaporates during the drying process, leaving no acidic residue—just a safe, shelf-stable, and delicious treat.

3. Are your treats “Human Grade”?

Absolutely. We source our raw materials from export-grade suppliers. We handle, hand-wash, and hand-cut every piece with the same care and hygiene standards you would use when cooking a meal for your own family. Please note: because we add zero salt, spices, or artificial flavorings, these treats will not be appealing to the human palate—but for your dog, they are a five-star feast!

4. What makes your “Dirty” Sheep Tripe different from store-bought tripe?

“Dirty” (or Green) tripe is the unprocessed stomach lining. Unlike white tripe found in supermarkets, ours is never bleached or scalded. We hand-wash it with clean water only to preserve the natural digestive enzymes and probiotics (like Lactobacillus) that are essential for your dog’s gut health.

5. Is Lamb Kidney better than Beef Kidney?

Lamb is considered a “novel” and hypoallergenic protein, making it a fantastic choice for dogs with sensitive stomachs or beef allergies. It is incredibly nutrient-dense, packed with Vitamin B12, Iron, and Selenium. Because it’s rare and harder to process, it’s a true superfood supplement.

6. How should I store these treats since they have no preservatives?

Because our treats are 100% natural, they must stay dry. Store them in a cool, dry place. While they are shelf-stable, we recommend consuming them within 2 weeks after opening. For longer storage, you can keep them in the fridge or freezer!

7. Why are some treats harder or chewier than others?

Because we use whole, natural muscle and organ meats, the texture depends on the natural fibers of the cut. For example, our Sheep Lung is light and crunchy, while our Ostrich Liver products are dense and chewy. Because we dry at low temperatures, we preserve the natural flexibility of the fibers, making them a ‘tougher’ chew that helps clean teeth, rather than a brittle treat that just shatters.”

8. Can puppies or senior dogs eat these?

Yes! We have treats that is perfect for all ages. From kidney chips that break easily into smaller “training” sizes or ostrich liver training treats that are already cut perfect for training to sheep lung that is gentle on growing puppy teeth and sensitive senior gums.

9. How many treats can I give my dog per day?

While our treats are healthy, they are very rich. We recommend the “10% Rule”: treats should not make up more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake.

10. Why do the treats have a strong “meaty” aroma?

That is the smell of real food! High-heat processing often kills the natural aroma, which is why brands add “liquid smoke” or artificial scents. Because we dry at low temperatures, the natural fats and proteins stay intact. Your dog’s nose can tell the difference—and they’ll love you for it!
